Research-Only Institute · Aotearoa New Zealand

Where disciplines meet, research begins.

The NZ Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies is an innovative research-only institute devoted to multi-, cross-, inter- and transdisciplinary studies — purpose-built for postdoctoral researchers who completed their PhD in one discipline and now wish to extend into another.

About the Institute

A research-only institute built for boundary-crossers

NZIIS is not a teaching institution. We exist for one purpose: to help researchers move beyond the discipline in which they were trained, and to generate new knowledge at the intersections.

MULTI

Multidisciplinary

Several disciplines address a shared question side by side, each retaining its own methods and language.

CROSS

Cross-disciplinary

One discipline's concepts, tools or findings are viewed through, and borrowed by, another.

INTER

Interdisciplinary

Frameworks, methods and epistemologies are integrated to produce a genuinely new synthesis.

TRANS

Transdisciplinary

Academic knowledge is co-produced with stakeholders beyond the academy to address complex real-world problems.

Postdoctoral Programme

Six months to two years. One discipline in, many disciplines out.

PhD candidates may apply after their PhD is finished, through the application window. Selected postdocs are matched with experienced researchers and experts recruited worldwide — specialists from a different field who guide them into new territory.

What the programme offers

  • A research-only environment with no teaching load
  • One-to-one mentorship from a senior expert outside your original discipline
  • Flexible duration — from six months to two years
  • Support to publish in the International Journal of Transdisciplinary Studies
  • Access to our worldwide network of registered reviewers and adjunct researchers

Application window

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis through each announced application window. Complete the form below — you will need your dissertation title, publication list and supervisor details.

    Fellowship

    Become an adjunct researcher

We recruit experienced researchers and experts worldwide, in every field, to guide postdocs who come from a different area. If you hold deep expertise in your discipline and are willing to mentor a researcher crossing into it, apply for an adjunct research position at NZIIS.

    01

    Adjunct Research Fellow

For established researchers who can mentor one or more postdocs and contribute to peer review.

    02

    Registered Reviewer

Join the reviewer pool of the International Journal of Transdisciplinary Studies.

    03

    Global & Remote

Collaboration is remote by design — our experts are recruited worldwide and contribute from anywhere.

Fellowship Application — Adjunct Research Position

Tell us about your expertise and the areas in which you are willing to guide postdoctoral researchers.

Adjunct positions are honorary and collaborative. Fellows may be invited to mentor postdocs and to join the reviewer panel of the institute's journal.
